ABOUT THE LA JOLLA COVE BRIDGE CLUB

The La Jolla Cove Bridge Club, located within the Ellen Browning Scripps Park at the La Jolla Cove, was built in 1939, a project of the WPA (Works Project Administration).  The Riford Room was an addition that was donated by Mrs. Florence Riford.  The Club facility once included a shuffleboard court, but that was removed and replaced by lawn, plants, flowers and trees in the mid-1990's.

Description, Indoors:

The large main room, measuring approximately 25 feet by 45 feet, is light and airy, with one entire wall filled with windows overlooking the ocean; the opposite wall overlooks the patio and lawn.  The room contains six columns, enhancing the appearance.  The carpet is charcoal gray.  A new mural by local artist Rik Erickson adorns one wall inside the main room, as well as the wall above the span of west-facing windows extending the length of the room.  It is estimated that this room will comfortably accommodate up to 100 people, seated at tables.

There is a separate entertainment room, perfect for music and dancing.  This room has hardwood floors, eliminating the need for bringing in a dance floor.  The room is furnished with several sofas, chairs and tables.  These, along with the potted plants, create a beautiful atmosphere for dancing or simply listening to the music.  The walls in this room are hand-painted by Rik Erickson as well.  It is estimated that about 50 or 60 people can fit into this room while dancing.

There are two restrooms inside the building, including one which is handicapped-accessible.  The kitchen is small, but is equipped with a sink, countertops, cabinets, a small under-counter refrigerator, and an "apartment-sized" stove/oven.  A full-sized refrigerator is located in a storage room.

Description, Outdoors:

The outdoor patio, approximately 70 feet by 14 feet, is a perfect location for serving food or drinks.

The lawn adjacent to the patio is accessible to the general public.  Use of this area is on a "first come" basis.  A natural boundary is formed on the perimeter of the lawn by bushes, plants and walkways.

The north area of the lawn is perfect for a wedding ceremony.  Your guests will be able to view the ocean and the hills and homes across the ocean.

Formal dining (glassware and china) is not allowed on the lawn, although dining on the lawn is permissible using non-breakable drinkware, dishes, plates and bowls.  (Formal dining is allowed inside the building, in the main room.)

Amplified music is not allowed outside the building, even if intended as background music while your guests are dining.  Acoustic (non-amplified) music is allowed outside.  You must comply with all City ordinances regarding noise levels, whether inside or outside of the building.  (Amplified music is allowed inside the building.)

Three walkways lead into the site.  You may place signs announcing your private function at the edge of the walkways, but you may not completely block the walkways with ribbons or ropes.

Visiting the Facility:

The best times to visit the facility are on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.  The Bridge Club plays bridge on all three days.  The doors are opened about 10:30 a.m., the games begin at 12:00 noon.

The best times to visit would be between 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on those 3 days.  Anyone who is in the building can show you around the facility.

The Club discourages people entering the building while the games are in progress.  However, If you get there after the game has already begun, and you feel that this is the only time you can view the site, then please do not make any noise or otherwise disturb the game or the players while you are looking around the building.
